THE HISTORY OF AQUAMARINE

The name aquamarine comes from the Latin for “water of the sea,” reflecting its tranquil colour. Since ancient times, it has been believed to protect sailors and symbolise safe travels. In the Victorian era, aquamarines were often set in sentimental rings and brooches, while the Edwardian period saw them in delicate platinum and diamond settings. By the Art Deco era, aquamarine became popular in bold geometric designs, often cut into striking emerald or step cuts.

THE MEANING OF AQUAMARINE

Aquamarine represents calm, clarity, and harmony. It is associated with open communication and lasting relationships, making it a beautiful choice for wedding and anniversary jewellery. It is also the birthstone for March and traditionally given for the 19th wedding anniversary.

AQUAMARINE IN ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE JEWELLERY

  • Victorian: Aquamarine rings and brooches with romantic motifs.

  • Edwardian: Platinum filigree rings accented with aquamarine and diamonds.

  • Art Deco: Large aquamarine emerald-cuts in bold geometric settings.

  • Mid-century: Cocktail rings showcasing aquamarine as a vibrant centre stone

CARING FOR YOUR AQUAMARINE JEWELLERY

Aquamarine is relatively durable (7.5–8 on the Mohs scale), making it suitable for regular wear.

  • Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush.

  • Avoid exposure to high heat or harsh chemicals.

  • Store separately to prevent scratches from harder gemstones.

Whether in an Edwardian aquamarine and diamond ring or a bold Art Deco cocktail piece, aquamarine is a gemstone that brings timeless elegance and a sense of calm beauty to any collection.
