THE HISTORY OF PERIDOT

Peridot has been treasured for over 4,000 years, with origins tracing back to ancient Egypt, where it was called the “gem of the sun.” During the Georgian and Victorian eras, peridot became fashionable in rings, brooches, and earrings, often set with seed pearls or diamonds. Its popularity continued into the Edwardian and Art Deco periods, where its vivid green tones were showcased in refined platinum settings and bold geometric designs.

THE MEANING OF PERIDOT

Peridot symbolises harmony, renewal, and protection. It is believed to bring good fortune and positive energy to its wearer. Known as the birthstone for August, peridot is also traditionally gifted for the 16th wedding anniversary.

PERIDOT IN ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE JEWELLERY

  • Georgian & Victorian: Peridot rings and lockets paired with seed pearls.

  • Edwardian: Platinum and diamond settings highlighting peridot’s fresh green glow.

  • Art Deco: Step-cut peridots in geometric rings and pendants.

  • Mid-century: Large statement peridot cocktail rings in yellow gold.

CARING FOR YOUR PERIDOT JEWELLERY

Peridot is moderately durable (6.5–7 on the Mohs scale) and should be worn with care.

  • Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush.

  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and exposure to strong heat.

  • Store separately to prevent scratches.

From Victorian peridot lockets to striking Art Deco rings, peridot is a gemstone that symbolises renewal, positivity, and timeless beauty.
