TANZANITE JEWELLERY GUIDE

Tanzanite is one of the world’s rarest gemstones, celebrated for its captivating violet-blue hues that shift in different lights. Discovered only in the 20th century, it has quickly become a favourite for engagement rings, anniversary gifts, and modern heirloom pieces.

THE HISTORY OF TANZANITE

Tanzanite was discovered in 1967 in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, the only place in the world where it is found. Tiffany & Co. named and introduced the stone to the international market, where it was instantly adored for its vivid and unusual colouring. Though not present in antique jewellery, it has been embraced in contemporary vintage-inspired designs.

THE MEANING OF TANZANITE

Tanzanite symbolises transformation, truth, and spiritual growth. Its unique ability to show different colours, blue, violet, and burgundy depending on the light, has made it a symbol of change and individuality. It is also the birthstone for December, alongside turquoise and zircon, and is traditionally given for the 24th wedding anniversary.

TANZANITE IN JEWELLERY

While it doesn’t appear in Georgian, Victorian, or Art Deco jewellery due to its recent discovery, tanzanite is popular in modern settings inspired by those eras. It is often featured in:

  • Engagement rings – as a bold alternative to sapphires or diamonds.

  • Statement cocktail rings – highlighting its vibrant colour.

  • Vintage-inspired jewellery – paired with diamonds or set in Art Deco-style designs.

CARING FOR YOUR TANZANITE JEWELLERY

Tanzanite is moderately durable (6–6.5 on the Mohs scale) and should be worn with care.

  • Clean gently with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, or sudden temperature changes.

  • Store separately to prevent scratches.

With its rarity, mesmerising colour, and modern history, tanzanite is a gemstone for those who want something truly unique, a jewel that stands apart while carrying elegance and meaning.
