CITRINE JEWELLERY GUIDE

Citrine, with its warm golden hues, has long been admired as a gemstone of joy, energy, and abundance. A favourite in antique Georgian and Victorian jewellery, citrine continues to be a popular choice for jewellery gifts, anniversary rings, and statement pieces.

THE HISTORY OF CITRINE

Citrine takes its name from the French word citron, meaning lemon, and has been cherished for centuries for its radiant colour. In the Georgian and Victorian eras, citrine was often used in large statement rings and brooches, reflecting the era’s love of bold, colourful gemstones. During the Art Deco period, citrine was frequently cut into geometric shapes and set in striking cocktail rings that remain highly collectable today.

THE MEANING OF CITRINE

Known as the “merchant’s stone,” citrine has long been associated with prosperity, success, and positivity. Its golden glow symbolises warmth, joy, and vitality. Citrine is also the birthstone for November and traditionally marks the 13th wedding anniversary.

CITRINE IN ANTIQUE AND VINTAGE JEWELLERY

  • Georgian & Victorian: Bold citrine rings and brooches in ornate gold settings.

  • Edwardian: Citrine pendants and lockets accented with seed pearls.

  • Art Deco: Step-cut citrines in bold platinum or white gold cocktail rings.

  • Mid-century: Large citrine cocktail rings in yellow gold, designed to catch the eye.

CARING FOR YOUR CITRINE JEWELLERY

Citrine is relatively durable (7 on the Mohs scale), but care is needed to preserve its vibrant colour.

  • Clean with warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause fading.

  • Store separately to prevent scratches from harder gemstones.

From Victorian citrine rings to dazzling Art Deco cocktail pieces, citrine is a gemstone that brings warmth, positivity, and timeless style to any jewellery collection.
